Baca: ROMANS 12:1-8
Bacaan tahunan: Ezekiel 16-17
According to the regulations given by God to Moses, when the Israelites wanted to offer sacrificial animals, the animals would be slaughtered and then burned. The act of offering sacrifices itself has many meanings, such as expressing gratitude, asking for forgiveness of sins, reconciliation, and others. A priest would examine whether the animal was eligible to be a sacrifice. If it met the requirements, the animal would be sacrificed. It becomes a sacrifice through its death. Being offered as a sacrifice means experiencing death.
Therefore, the idea presented by the Apostle Paul about a living sacrifice is something very different. He emphasizes that as people who have been saved through the sacrifice of Jesus, we are asked to offer our bodies to God. Not by surrendering ourselves to be slaughtered and burned like the concept of the Old Testament. Instead, surrendering ourselves to be fully used to do the will of God. Every part of our body is used for good and noble purposes. That is our true worship.
As redeemed people of Christ, we are commanded to honor God with our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:20b). We can do this by willingly reaching out to help the weak. Also, using our hands to work and produce something so that we can share. We step with our feet to bring good news to others. We use our mouths to speak words that build up and strengthen others. Yes, dedicating every part of our bodies to do good makes it a living sacrifice and pleasing to God.
