Baca: PHILIPPIANS 3
Bacaan tahunan: Ezekiel 31-33
An employee is willing to work overtime to earn more money. A racer is willing to spend money to modify his car. Hana is willing to pray continuously until she is considered drunk by Imam Eli in order to have a child. Abraham is willing to sacrifice his only son, out of obedience to God.
Every willingness is based on a goal. In order to achieve a goal, someone is willing to sacrifice something of great value. The same thing happens in the life of Paul. He, a Pharisee and an expert in the Law, is willing to leave his past achievements behind in order to become a follower of Jesus. Because his goal is Jesus, he is willing to sacrifice everything else outside of Jesus. What was once considered a gain, is now considered a loss, like rubbish.
It is not an easy struggle to leave the glory of the past. Aren't there many people who like to repeatedly tell about the achievements they have obtained? However, the personal goal of life that dares to confess faith should be the Lord Jesus Christ, not others. Therefore, everything outside of Him, which is carnal/fleshly, is nothing more than a means. Borrowing Paul's term, everything that is fleshly is "rubbish". It can be used as fertilizer, but it is not the goal expected to be harvested. This is the importance of introspecting ourselves, so that we do not misjudge the goal. So that we do not just collect rubbish, but heavenly treasures of eternal value in the sight of the Lord.
