GIVE UNTIL HURT

Baca: Luke 21:1-4

...but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on. (Luke 21:4)

Bacaan tahunan: John 5-7

There are a variety of conscience can arise when we give offerings. "Is it appropriate about what I give?" Or, "Do I have the correct motivation in giving?" Or, "What is God's comment about my offerings?" Or, "May God forgive me for the offering I give?"

When Jesus saw the people give offerings, He said: "This poor widow gave more than all (rich) people. For they all gave gifts of their wealth, but this widow gives of her shortcomings, even her whole living" (verse 3-4). It turns out that Jesus was not considered "much" by the numbers. Note that the two copper coins (or "dime") that the widow has is all of hers. So, the widow gave more. Copper is the smallest currency; and the widow (Greek: Khera, meaning: empty) is a person who dispossessed. Although small, it is a big amount for the "empty".

Jesus' point of view about offerings is definitely not about the large amount, but the magnitude of love that enables us to want to give until "it hurt ourself". When we dare to give offerings willingly as it's part of our living, then we do not have to hesitate. This kind of granting is highly valued by God. As Mother Teresa once wrote: "One thing I asked of you, never be afraid to give. But do not give of your excess. Give at the time that is difficult for you" - DKL

LORD, TEACH ME TO NOT CARELESSLY GIVE, BUT TO TRULY GIVE OF TRUE LOVE
