DECEIVED BY THE PRIDE OF HEART

Read: Obadiah 1:1-9

Bible in a year: Acts 9-10

We are accustomed to pride ourselves when we see our children succeed in their studies, when our partners succeed in their jobs. It is a reasonable pride, but if unchecked, pride can make our hearts arrogant and then degrade others. Pride like this is clearly something evil because we feel superior or higher than others.

The nation of Edom boasted of themselves with several things, including feeling themselves as wise people (verse 8) and considering themselves strong like heroes (verse 9). Self-pride continued with their belief that they had become a strong and unbeatable nation because they lived in highlands or mountainous areas (verses 3-4). They boasted in front of Judah (the remnant of the Israelites who were still in their promised land) while Judah was going through destruction, not when Judah was still safe (Obadiah 1:12-13). Such pride clearly cannot be tolerated by the Lord and Edom will be humiliated!

The greatest temptation in a person's life is when they are in a high, sheltered, and comfortable place. From a high place, they are tempted to see everything below them, tempted to feel stronger, and tempted to degrade others. They do not realize that the temptation will make them slip and fall. Even harsh reprimands cannot make them aware and they insist on saying, "Who can bring me down to the ground?"

BE CAREFUL WHEN WE ARE BROUGHT TO HIGH PLACES BECAUSE WE WILL BE BROUGHT DOWN AS LOW AS POSSIBLE IF WE DO NOT GUARD OUR HEART
