EMPTY HOPE

Baca: 2 KINGS 4:8-37

Bacaan tahunan: Acts 7-8

The giver of empty hope is directed towards someone who lies and does not fulfill his promises. A congregation complained, they were very tired because their friends repeatedly deceived them by giving empty hope. Their friends borrowed money with very urgent reasons and promised to return it soon. At the promised time, their friends never returned the borrowed money.

The woman from Shunem felt deceived and given empty hope by Elisha. Every time Elisha passed by, this woman hosted Elisha. She also made a room furnished with furniture for Elisha to stay. Elisha promised that next year she would embrace a son. The woman replied to not lie to her. The following year, the woman gave birth to a son as Elisha had said. However, after the child grew up, he died in his mother's arms. The woman met Elisha on Mount Carmel, then said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn't I say, 'Do not deceive me'" (verse 28). The woman felt deceived by Elisha. When Elisha arrived at the house, the child was already dead. She prayed to the Lord and the child came back to life. The Lord never deceives and gives empty hope. The Lord raised the Shunemite woman's child.

Often happens to humans - you promise, you deny. Unlike the Lord. The Lord will not violate His covenant, and His word will not be altered (Psalm 89:35). He remembers His covenant forever, the word that He commanded for a thousand generations (Psalm 105:8). Never doubt the Lord in any condition we are in right now. Keep believing, holding on, and hoping in the Lord's promises. He never breaks His promises.
