BLESSINGS OF NEIGHBORS

Baca: 2 KINGS 4:1-7

Bacaan tahunan: Jeremiah 51-52

Moving houses several times has given me a lot of experiences with neighbors who certainly have various characters. One of the advantages of having neighbors is that they often become the closest people whose presence can be relied upon when we need help. A small example is when we need kitchen spices in small quantities, borrowing from neighbors is a common practice. Having good relationships with neighbors is indeed a blessing that needs to be maintained.

The widow in 2 Kings 4 also received blessings due to her good relationship with her neighbors. After her husband died, this widow was in debt so that her two sons were threatened to be made slaves by the debt collector. She brought her problem to the Prophet Elisha, and admitted that the only possession she had was a jar of oil. The prophet told her to borrow jars from all her neighbors. Yes, all her neighbors! Imagine what would happen if she didn't get along with them. As a result, following the prophet's command, this widow poured oil from the jar into all those jars until they were full. She was able to pay off all her debts, and had enough savings for her and her children's future.

Our neighbors may be our relatives, but they can also be strangers with different professions, ethnicities, or religions. We may also have different views on many things. However, we should strive to maintain harmonious relationships with them, and radiate the love of God that we have received to them.
