Baca: MARK 13:1-13
Bacaan tahunan: Ezekiel 37-39
The temple of God in Jerusalem was a very magnificent building in its time. Supported by large, beautifully carved stones. Many parts of it were also overlaid with gold. The result was a magnificent building with amazing architecture. The building became the pride of the people of Israel, as well as the center of their worship. Because the temple was a sign of God's presence among His people.
Unfortunately, Israel's admiration for the temple did not align with their obedience to Him. In the end, they only admired the grandeur of the building. Their worship instead became a place for self-exaltation, and a mask to cover their sins. They forgot the essence or true purpose of the temple of God, which should have been a means to encounter God, and its fruit seen in lives that reflect His word.
Jesus also prophesied the destruction of the temple, as if to emphasize that it was just an ordinary building. Temporary in nature. Not everlasting. Can be destroyed. Jesus' words serve as a warning for the disciples-including all of us-to not only focus on admiring worldly or material things, but on something of eternal value, something that cannot be destroyed or perish. To a reasonable extent, we may be fascinated by physical beauty, the splendor of buildings, abundant wealth, high positions, or super advanced technology. However, we need to remember that all of those are temporary. Only God is eternal. He should be the center of our lives and admiration. His will should be the foundation of our lives.
