Baca: OBADIAH 1:1-16
Bacaan tahunan: Matthew 13-14
When the land of Judah was plundered, the Edomites were not involved. However, they had such a negative attitude that Obadiah called them as evil as the looters (v. 11). They did not help, only "stood aloof" (v. 11), exalted themselves, mocked, and even rejoiced that Judah was struck by disaster (v. 12).
How bad the attitude of the Edomites was. Stingy, as the Javanese people say. What is that? Dislike seeing others happy, unhappy seeing others joyful, unwilling for others to experience good things, disappointed if others succeed, hate seeing others loving each other, but rejoice to see others in difficulty, happy about other people's misfortunes, joyous to see others in distress. That's why the Lord reminds us, "Do not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, and do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their ruin; do not boast in the day of their adversity" (v. 12). The Lord rebukes Edom, "Do not be stingy."
Every person-and all of us-can be infected with a stingy attitude. If we let prejudices, grudges, envy, hatred, etc. dominate our hearts, a stingy attitude can easily grow and spread.
The Lord reminds us, "Do not be stingy." Not only because stinginess is evil and destructive, but also because the Lord knows that in the end, it is ourselves who decide whether we will allow grudges, prejudices, etc. to dominate our hearts and give birth to a stingy attitude, or - with the help of the Lord - we fight against these negative things and replace them with love.
