SAVIOR, MESSIAH, AND LORD

Baca: LUKE 2:8-20

Bacaan tahunan: 2 John, 3 John, Jude

Reading the Bible carefully can lead us to discover things that may have been overlooked. There are details of specific events, which if not observed, will be missed from our observation and understanding. I have also experienced this, including when for some time I overlooked detailed information about the good news received by the shepherds at the birth of baby Jesus, accompanied by a heavenly choir that must have been very melodious.

There are three identities about Jesus conveyed to the shepherds, namely Savior, Messiah (the Anointed One of God), and Lord (the Sole Ruler over human life). It is interesting that the angels did not mention the name "Jesus" to the shepherds, but instead mentioned these three identities. It seems that this different message is deliberately conveyed, to affirm the personality of Jesus that God has appointed to save humanity from their sins, the Anointed One of God to perform miraculous works, and eventually He will become the Lord over all living things.

God certainly has a reason for choosing the shepherds as the group to receive that noble message, even though it is not explicitly mentioned. However, for us as the "message receivers" through the writing of the Apostle Luke, now we not only understand but also grateful because the Person who was the object of the angels' proclamation, now dwells in our hearts, since we have received Jesus as our Lord and personal Savior.
