Baca: MARK 4:35-41
Bacaan tahunan: Genesis 32-34
Evan, the chief organizer of a national-scale youth event, felt very grateful when the three-day event went smoothly. Good weather was also an important factor that made him praise God because a few days before the event, it had been raining quite often, even accompanied by storms. 'I can't imagine if it rained yesterday even for a while, our outdoor event would have been disrupted,' he said while testifying. 'Fortunately, it didn't rain because God heard our prayers.'
Rain is indeed a common natural event, especially for those of us living in tropical countries where rain and heat alternate throughout the year. However, in certain conditions, we still need the intervention of God, the Person who has power over this universe. The event of calming the storm at Jesus' command is just one proof that God has power over this nature, which must submit to His authority. We also remember that during Elijah's time, there was no rain for three and a half years by the will of God (James 5:17).
Regarding natural events, there is indeed a will and sovereignty of God that cannot be resisted. However, as His people, we can still ask, while remaining grateful for whatever His answer may be. As long as it is not about satisfying desires, forcing personal will, or glorifying oneself, it seems that God does not mind intervening through natural events, so that we can realize there is a Person who has power and hears the prayers of His people.
GOD HAS AUTHORITY OVER NATURE, BUT HIS SOVEREIGNTY MUST ALSO BE ACKNOWLEDGED BY HIS PEOPLE
