Baca: 2 SAMUEL 18:33-19:4
Bacaan tahunan: Daniel 10-12
Once, as I passed by a cemetery, I was stunned to see one grave. Someone seemed to have just visited it. On top of it, there were three large beautiful fresh red rose bouquets. I guessed, perhaps in his lifetime, the deceased was a lover of flowers. Then I remembered this statement, "The dead receive more flowers than the living, because regret is stronger than gratitude." Yes, many people fail to show their love while their loved ones are still alive.
King David's experience shows this pain. Amnon, his son, had defiled Tamar, David's daughter from another wife. When David found out about the evil deed, he was very angry, but did nothing. This made Absalom, Tamar's half-brother, vengeful, and he devised a plan to kill Amnon. Then Absalom fled for three years (2 Samuel 13). One of David's friends tried to reconcile them by pleading for Absalom to be allowed back to Jerusalem. However, for two years David never met his son (2 Samuel 14:28). Absalom was filled with vengeance and bitterness towards his father. He planned a coup, but it ended with his death.
When David heard of Absalom's death, he wept in deep sorrow. He repeatedly said, "My son, Absalom! My son, my son!" He even wished to die in place of his son. David confessed how much he loved his son, when his son could no longer hear his words. His regret came too late. May we not take the path of regret, by willingly showing love, appreciation, or forgiveness to our loved ones while they are still with us.
