FACING THE FLEETINGNESS OF LIFE

Baca: PSALM 39

Bacaan tahunan: 2 Kings 1-3

The ancient Israelites understood human life as a short journey. Life is like morning dew that quickly disappears; or, a shadow that briefly appears, then vanishes. Related to this understanding, David honestly expressed his complaints. He used expressions about 'strangers' and 'sojourners'. For him, this life is not an eternal home, but a temporary stay. He understood that life is fleeting, fragile, and full of temporariness.

However, David did not stop at complaints. He came to God in prayer. Thus, he gained enlightenment: the fleetingness of life actually reminded him that only God is the ultimate goal. He also realized that he could not put his hope in the temporary world, but only in the eternal God. This is a spiritual turning point - from emptiness to surrender to the love and sovereignty of God.

David's faith experience helps us realize that the fleetingness of life is not a reason to despair. It is an invitation to live more wisely and rely on God. The world offers many alluring and captivating things: success, wealth, pleasure, and popularity. However, only what is done in the Lord can endure.

Yes, life is fleeting and temporary. Precisely because of that, we should use our time wisely. Keep placing our hope only in God. Then, strive to make each step a meaningful footprint. Not only meaningful for ourselves, but also for others. Thus, our fleeting life will have eternal value. --SAP/www.renunganharian.net
