STILL IN CONTROL

Read: MATTHEW 26:47-56

Bible in a year: Ruth 1-4

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was arrested. Judas, the betraying disciple, showed the place where He was to a large group of people, who were messengers of the chief priests and elders of the Jewish people (verse 47). Betrayed, arrested, and led to be crucified, seemingly showing Jesus' helplessness. Instantly, the world spread the news that God can be weak.

However, there was an incident at that time. Peter drew his sword and cut off the ear of Malchus, the servant of the high priest (see John 18:10). Jesus did not approve of his action. He rebuked Peter, saying, "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?" (verse 53). The rebuke shattered the tumult of the world. Apparently, it was not that Jesus was unable to do anything, but He chose to accept all the actions of those people towards Him. It was not that Jesus could not fight back, but He chose not to fight back for the salvation of all mankind (verse 54). When it seemed that the Lord was weak, He still remained strong. When it seemed that the Lord was powerless, He still remained in control of everything in this life.

This truth is good news for us. It means no matter how bad the situation we are facing right now, we do not need to lose heart because we understand that the Lord is still in control. In Him there is power to save us. His strength is not diminished to provide help. It is not in vain for us to persevere in prayer. Hope in the Lord will not disappoint. Surely there will be breakthroughs, restoration, and a way out for every struggle. --LIN/www.renunganharian.net
