Bible in a year: Exodus 19-21
I was surprised to see a photo of a money transfer receipt with a nominal amount of more than ten million, sent by our community to help Heni, a fellow believer who needs financial support for medical treatment. About three days earlier, information about Heni's health was shared, touching the hearts of many who know her to donate. Some also provided time to visit, to give direct support so that Heni does not feel like she is fighting alone.
The world seems to be moving towards a self-centered attitude. Compassion is starting to erode, even when knowing that there are people in real need, few hands are extended to help. Busyness and work routines are also often reasons why visiting or greeting through short messages or phone calls may rarely be done. However, from Paul's experience today we can learn the true meaning of compassion. The people of God wholeheartedly supported Paul's ministry by sending assistance, which Paul acknowledged as an act of "sharing in his troubles" (verse 14) and a sacrifice he called: a fragrant offering to God (verse 18).
Indeed, believers are never called to live for themselves. Every goodness of God experienced, from forgiveness of sins to blessings in all forms, should grow into compassion for others, especially those in need. --GHJ/www.renunganharian.net
