THE DRYING OF WADI KERIT

Read: 1 KINGS 17:7-16

Bible in a year: Genesis 27-29

Ahab, the king of Israel, committed evil in the sight of the Lord. He worshiped Baal. Elijah, the prophet, threatened that there would be no dew or rain. Then, by the guidance of the Lord, Elijah stayed hidden on the banks of Wadi Kerit east of the Jordan River. From the wadi, Elijah drank. In the morning and evening, ravens brought bread and meat to him (see 1 Kings 17:1-6).

After some time, the wadi dried up (v. 7). At that time, perhaps the ravens also stopped coming to bring food. Again, Elijah heard the guidance of the Lord. He had to go to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. Later, a widow would give him food (v. 8-9). In fact, the Lord is Almighty! He can sanctify Wadi Kerit. He can make the water in it continue to flow. However, if so, the prophet would be lulled into thinking that Wadi Kerit was the one supporting his life, as well as the ravens. So, the Lord allowed the wadi to be in its proper condition. The Lord wanted Elijah to remember that He was the one giving him drink and food, or in other words, He is the Source of Life.

Similar things happen to us. Sometimes the Lord allows the "Wadi Kerit" of our lives to dry up. Everything doesn't go smoothly, instead various difficulties arise. Then, we who were once complacent now look to the Lord. We who used to think that the success enjoyed so far was due to our own abilities, realize that everything is because of the Lord. He is the one providing support and protection. He is the one who blesses, supports, and helps, or more precisely He is the Source of Life.
