SINNING IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

Read: 1 SAMUEL 2:12-17, 22-25

Bible in a year: Romans 1-3

As priests, Hophni and Phinehas were tasked with leading God's people in worship activities, especially in presenting sacrifices. This honorable position should have been carried out by adhering to the rules that the Lord had clearly established in the Law of Moses. However, in practice, they did as they pleased. They abused their positions for their own pleasure, even resorting to threats of violence (vv. 13-16). It had become common knowledge that they were also committing adultery with the servants of the Lord (v. 22). They disregarded all warnings and admonitions from their father and the people they served.

Sin and evil can indeed happen anywhere. Where truth is proclaimed, lies can also be found. Where love is preached, enmity can also arise. It is even possible for someone to use God's name to conceal their wickedness. There is no area that is immune to sin because all humans have fallen into its bondage.

Hophni and Phinehas lived lives full of sin and acted as if it were normal. To this day, many people have the same mindset. They are indifferent to the true and holy God, who desires His people to live lives pleasing to Him. They seem to forget that sin will surely bring us to experience the wrath of God and lead to eternal destruction. These two priests also received punishment from God. Yes, if we continue to live in sin, we will perish. We should acknowledge our sinfulness, repent, and learn to live according to God's will, wherever we are.
