Bible in a year: Acts 24-26
The practice of bribery is no longer unfamiliar to our ears. A difficult matter will become easy with bribery. A fact can be twisted with bribery. Because of bribery, an innocent person ends up suffering punishment. Truly a very detrimental behavior, isn't it? The practice of bribery also apparently occurred in the life of the people of Israel.
In regulating the life and social responsibility of the people of Israel, the issue of bribery was also written into a regulation. Bribery is money or goods given outside official rules to achieve certain goals. God clearly states that bribery is dangerous because it 'blinds clear vision and twists the matter of the righteous' (verse 8). Bribery is a practice of injustice because there are people who benefit unfairly and often involve deception and lies. The recipient of bribery enriches themselves by ignoring justice and the law. God prohibits bribery in the social life of the people of Israel to build a fair and harmonious communal life and to apply the laws established by God Himself.
Bribery, in any form, is clearly not pleasing to God. Let us remember that we live in a time when the practice of bribery is considered normal. Many people have been blinded for personal gain and no longer care about others. As His redeemed people, God desires us to reject any practice that harms others. May His word always enlighten our hearts against every practice that blinds the heart.
