STEWARDSHIP OF THE EARTH

Read: Colossians 1:15-23

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16)

Bible in a year: 1 Chronicles 1-2

The term "steward" indicates someone who is given responsibility for managing the property of others. In Christianity, the term is usually used to do with how we use our time, treasure, and talents belong to God. What about the stewardship of the earth?

Colossians reveal the primacy of Christ over all things, including the earth where we live (verse 18). The explanation? Christ there earlier than all things (verse 17). In Christ all things together (v. 17) and reconciled (verse 20). All things were created by and for Christ (verse 16). Wow!

What's the difference our attitude to know that the world and everything in it was created by and for Christ? We need to maintain awareness that the universe is His. And, that when we misuse and waste of his creation, we mean being damaged and robbed of his property. From the testimony of the Bible we find that God not only rejoice when creating and maintaining a human, but also when He created and maintains the universe. From the beginning, God engage us to be stewards over his creation (see Genesis 1:26, 28; 2:15). This is the basis of why we need to keep the earth belongs to God is to be responsible, for his glory.

Let us honor God by reducing waste, reducing energy use, and develop a lifestyle that is friendly to the earth. Let's encourage people in the circle of influence to do the same thing. - JOO
