Read: 1 Kings 18:16-19
When he saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?" (1 Kings 18:17)
Bible in a year: Roma 7-9
Why are people afraid of telling the truth? It could be for telling the truth is risky. Like the story of an embattled elementary school children for revealing cheating in national examinations. He is considered to harm the school and his friends. He was excommunicated. The truth which he revealed has the ominous impact and directly harming himself.
When Ahab worshiped idols and the people of Israel turned away from his Lord, Elijah speaks the words of the Lord that there will be no dew nor rain in the land (17:1). Once it goes on for three years, God asks Elijah back to Ahab. Unfortunately, the king of Israel instead of regretting the untruth that he had committed, and fixing things, but instead directly accuse Elijah: "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?" (18:17)
We can also experience this at the time of uncovering the truth in the family, ministry, or workplace. Moreover, if we were alone, dealing with people who have more power, and behind them there are many supporters (cf. verse 19). So it is understandable if up to now a number of irregularities, injustices, and even sin, continue to occur. It is likely because people are afraid of the discomfort that can arise when truth is revealed.
We are called to be part of God's plan for families, services, jobs, and even our nation, to obtain peace. There is truth that God wants us to express. Not to harm the people we love, but to prevent them to harm themselves (18:18). With God's help, be brave for the truth! - SL
