Baca: John 10:24-33
"We are not stoning you for any good work," they replied, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God." (John 10:33)
Bacaan tahunan: Deuteronomy 1-2
Many people do not believe, both in and outside the church building, recognizes Jesus as a great prophet or great teacher who helped mankind to know God and live better. Do you agree?
Reading today contains one of Jesus' conversation with the people in his day. At that time the Jews were in the confines of the Roman invaders, and looked forward to the release of the promised Messiah of God. See the wisdom and extraordinary work of Jesus, they are very curious about whether Jesus was the Messiah (verse 24). Jesus' answer is to shake, to the extent that they do not stone him with stones (verse 31). Why? Since Jesus claimed to be God (v. 33) by saying that his work see his Lordship (verse 25), He can give and guarantee of eternal life (verses 28-29), he and God are one (v. 30). People who listen can not take a neutral position. If his statement was wrong, it means that blasphemy should be punished by stoning. If his statement is true, that they should worship him as God.
C.S. Lewis concluded that a common man who speaks like Jesus can not be the great prophet or a great moral teacher, because such figures can not be claimed to be God. It may be that he is a lunatic, or he is an impostor. Could Jesus be insane? A big liar? Or ... He is a God who deserves our respect and adoration in total? Who do you think of Jesus, and how you should behave towards him? - JOO
