Javanese philosophy says that the teacher is to be fellowed and imitated (believed his teachings and his life be an example) by his students. Japan, a country famous for very advanced technology, it also recognizes the critical role of the teacher. When it ravaged the second world war, Emperor Hirohito of concern is: "There are how many teachers are left in Japan?" The teacher's role is very central in the civilization of human life anywhere. Qualified teachers will obviously result in the generation of quality anyway.
It is interesting what the Bible says about teachers: "... not many of you want to become a teacher ..." What does he mean? Does the Bible does not encourage followers of Christ to become a teacher? The next sentence gives an explanation. James is giving a warning so that people do not regard lightly the role of teachers and teaching others carelessly. If someone teaches the wrong thing, who taught so go astray, because the Lord demands more accountability from those who call themselves as teachers (compare this warning by Matthew 18:6).
Is there in these days we are given the opportunity to teach others? Perhaps as a leader, pastor, parent, or even a professional teacher. Actions and our words, can bring more people to know and glorify God, or otherwise, stay away and do what grieves His heart - SST
