MISUNDERSTANDING

Baca: JOHN 12:12-19

Bacaan tahunan: 1 Kings 3-5

Currently, popularity has become a requirement that can facilitate someone to be chosen as a leader, especially if that person is famous for good and beneficial things for society. Therefore, it is not uncommon for ambitious people who want to become leaders to utilize famous people to support them in order to increase their popularity.

Jesus was already well-known among the Jews because of His teachings and miracles in healing many people, casting out evil spirits, and most notably, He had just raised Lazarus from the dead. This news spread quickly through word of mouth and became a hot topic among the Jews.

When they heard that Jesus was entering Jerusalem, His popularity led them to welcome Him with the hope that He was the Messiah according to the Jews' understanding, who would be the political king of Israel and free them from Roman occupation. Whereas Jesus as the Messiah meant to be the king of the eternal spiritual kingdom, who frees humanity from the power of sin. Their misunderstanding ultimately led to their hopes being unfulfilled and eventually turning against Jesus.

Who is Jesus to us? Have we truly understood that He is the eternal Lord and Savior who frees us from sin? Or do we only understand Him as a Deliverer from all difficulties and problems in our lives? Let us get to know Him more deeply so that we can enjoy His eternal grace throughout our lives. --ANT/www.renunganharian.net
