GEHAZI'S CORRUPTION

Baca: 2 KINGS 5

Bacaan tahunan: Amos 1-5

As a servant of the Prophet Elisha, Gehazi had accompanied the prophet in proclaiming the word of the Lord and had witnessed various miracles that God performed through Elisha. This experience should have made Gehazi have a fear of the Lord and respect for His prophet. However, it did not automatically happen.

Naaman, the commander of the Aramean army, had been healed from his illness after Elisha instructed him to bathe seven times in the Jordan River. He then offered a very large amount of gifts as a sign of his gratitude. However, Elisha refused it. Elisha wanted to teach Naaman that the healing he experienced was not because of his merit, but because of God Himself. As a result, Naaman willingly offered himself to God by committing to be His worshipper (verse 17). Elisha then sent him back to his country.

However, Gehazi felt that Prophet Elisha had been too kind to the commander. Fully aware, even in the name of God, he sought his own advantage. He fabricated a lie and misused Elisha's name to gain profit from Naaman. Truly a cunning and evil act. Gehazi may have forgotten that the God he had been serving is an All-Knowing God. Or, the temptation of worldly wealth had blinded him. He forgot that every action has consequences. He and his descendants suffered from the same disease that Naaman had. Truly sad and terrible. May the costly lesson experienced by Gehazi speak loudly to our hearts so that we do not follow in his footsteps.
