CAUSES OF UNHAPPINESS

Baca: 1 KINGS 21:1-16

Bacaan tahunan: Obadiah, Jonah

"Praise the Lord!" said a woman after ending a phone conversation. Her face looked cheerful. Just now, her favorite supermarket informed her that she won a frying pan as a lucky draw prize. She called her friend and told her about it. "Me too," her friend said, "I got a five-gram gold necklace." Instantly, the woman's face turned sour.

Similar thing happened to Ahab after Naboth refused to do business with him. He felt unhappy because he thought, as a king, he did not yet have all the best things from the land. Besides, there was a fertile vineyard next to his palace, suitable for a vegetable garden. However, the owner refused to sell or trade it, stating that the vineyard was part of his ancestral inheritance. Ahab was seen entering his palace with a sullen and angry face. He lay down with his face turned away and refused to eat. Jezebel, his cruel wife, quickly took action to restore her husband's happiness. She devised a scheme to slander Naboth so that Naboth would be sentenced to death. Then Ahab freely took the vineyard.

Now the cause of unhappiness is clearly visible. Someone feels unhappy not because they are not blessed by the Lord, but because they compare the blessings of others which are greater or better than theirs. Or simply put, they look to the left and to the right. While those who are being watched feel the same way, and in the end, they are all unhappy. Let's not be like that. Don't be willing to lose joy just because of a glance. Realize that the blessings in our hands are already the best measure from the Lord.
