Bacaan tahunan: Joshua 9-11
Alcohol intoxication leads to various negative impacts. The head feels dizzy, acts unconsciously or loses self-awareness, experiences mood swings, decreased coordination to memory loss, and even brain damage. Various dangerous or embarrassing actions can occur beyond control when someone is drunk.
Belshazzar was a descendant of Nebuchadnezzar, the famous king of Babylon. Once, he held a luxurious feast for his nobles. In his drunkenness, he ordered that all the gold and silver utensils that were once seized by his ancestors from the House of God in Jerusalem, be used in the feast while glorifying their idols. This action showed a lack of respect or fear towards the God of Israel, even though he knew the greatness of God's deeds towards his ancestors (verse 22). That very night, God executed His judgment. Belshazzar was killed by enemy forces and the Babylonian Kingdom came to an end in history.
Keeping our minds sound is not easy. Many complex and challenging situations can arise at any time and tempt us to think clearly. However, letting ourselves be enslaved by drunkenness or other bad behaviors is the same as putting our own neck into a deadly trap. Instead of being controlled by intoxication towards something, our lives should be led by the Spirit of God. We surrender ourselves to His guidance in His word, so that our words and actions will reflect a life that shows respect to the Lord. --HT/www.renunganharian.net
