Baca: GALATIANS 1:1-5
Bacaan tahunan: Joshua 5-8
In the New Testament era, Galatia was influenced by various cultures and teachings. The congregation there lived in tension between the Gospel of Christ and other teachings. Those various teachings tried to lure them back to the old rigid laws and traditions. This situation caused confusion among the congregation.
Similarly, in our time, influenced by various perspectives, many people feel confused about the true meaning of freedom. Many understand it as an opportunity to do whatever they want. Freedom is considered synonymous with indulging desires. However, it actually brings new chains of destructive dependencies.
Therefore, Paul emphasizes to the Galatian congregation (and to us) that true freedom only exists in Christ. Why? Because He has given Himself to liberate human beings from the chains of sin. That is the essence of the Gospel: not humans liberating (saving) themselves, but the redemptive work of Christ on the cross. Therefore, true freedom is not a license to live selfishly. Instead, it is an opportunity to live in love and truth, in harmony with His will.
Now, under the guise of freedom, digital media relentlessly offers various instant pleasures, popularity, and self-glory. They all seem enticing. However, they do not truly set us free. On the contrary, we are increasingly enslaved by the temptations and chaos of the world. Only Christ is able to provide true freedom. Because He not only frees us from guilt, but also from the power of sin that enslaves. Let us live out true freedom. --SAP/www.renunganharian.net
