Baca: NEHEMIAH 8:1-11
Bacaan tahunan: Colossians
After going through 70 years of exile in Babylon due to their sins, the Israelites returned to Jerusalem according to God's promise. Ezra became one of their leaders. Ezra was a priest, as well as a skilled scribe in the Law of Moses, and committed to obeying and teaching it to the people of God (Ezra 7:6, 10). The generation born and raised in Babylon was certainly no longer accustomed to the various teachings of the Law. Ezra realized this. So when he and some Levites read the Law of Moses to all the gathered people in front of the gate of the house of God, they read it clearly and explained its meaning, so that everyone could understand it. As a result, the Israelites realized how they had sinned so they wept, mourned, and repented.
This should be our goal when reading the word of God, which is to understand it and then apply it. Not just a meaningless routine. Not so that others think we are righteous. That should also be the main goal of those who proclaim the word of the Lord, whether through preaching or various other media. Not to show off one's greatness so that the listeners praise the preacher. But to make the word of the Lord understood clearly, so that it can be done in everyday life.
Reading, listening, or preaching the word of God should end with an understanding that leads us to do something according to the will of God. We are rebuked, reminded, corrected, guided, taught, and strengthened to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.
