Baca: LUKE 15:11-32
Bacaan tahunan: Deuteronomy 14-16
The youngest son acted rebelliously. He demanded his inheritance while his father was still alive, essentially wishing for his father's death. Then he went off and lived a reckless life. After going bankrupt, he returned. Hoping to be accepted as a servant. However, the father welcomed him with a joyous feast and restored his status as a beloved son. The eldest son protested vehemently. He refused to join the celebration. In his eyes, his brother deserved rejection and to suffer.
The protest of the eldest son seems reasonable. Since the youngest son had received his inheritance, he no longer had any rights in that house. All this time, he was the one working hard to manage and take responsibility for his father's business. All that remained was his portion of the inheritance. He was angry at his father's kindness. To him, his father's actions were foolish and embarrassing. He remained stubborn even when his father tried to persuade him.
The anger of the eldest son shows how little he knew his father. He did not understand his father's longing and heart. His heart was also distant from his father. He felt he was right because he lived in obedience to his father. However, that obedience was done out of obligation. As a duty. Not out of a heart that loved his father or as a sign of respect for him. Worse, the eldest son turned out to be me and all those who often feel righteous and therefore feel entitled to reject the presence of sinners. The Father, who is God Himself, desires for me to also experience His love and kindness, and be willing to share that love and joy with His other children. His joy should also be our joy. --HT/www.renunganharian.net
IF GOD WELCOMES THE REPENTANCE OF SINNERS WITH OPEN ARMS, WE SHOULD ALSO ACT IN THE SAME WAY WITH HEARTS FULL OF JOY.
