Baca: JEREMIAH 31:1-9
Bacaan tahunan: Numbers 31-32
A mother had been praying for years for her son who had fallen into bad company. Every night she cried out in prayer and hoped her son would come home. Until one day, the son returned with a sorrowful face. He hugged his mother and said, "Mother, forgive me. I have sinned, I repent." The mother couldn't speak. She just cried. Not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy. It was tears of joy, the fruit of the mother's unwavering faith who never stopped waiting for her son to come home.
Today's reading from the Book of Jeremiah contains God's message of comfort for the people of Israel who were in exile. In the midst of suffering, God gives a promise of restoration. He will lead them back with tenderness (ver. 9). They do come with tears, not tears of sadness, but tears of joy because of God's eternal love (ver. 3) and His clear promise of restoration. God not only guides them home, but also gives them a safe path.
Each of us has cried or is currently crying. We cry because of loss, struggles, or failures. However, God can turn those tears into joy. When we return to Him, when prayers are answered, or when healing occurs, that's where we understand the meaning of tears of joy. God does not promise a path without tears, but He promises that every tear we shed is not in vain. --SYS/www.renunganharian.net
