Baca: Psalm 51:1-8
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. (Psalm 51:1)
Bacaan tahunan: Acts 15-17
Terms of a prisoner get a remission, partly because he considered has good behavior while in the prison. Goodness led to a reduced sentence. God's grace do the exact opposite. He devotes grace precisely because we are disobedient and unable to repair itself by our own strength.
David is very aware of this. When he committed adultery with Bathsheba, he was in the heyday as king of Israel. His nation known him since he became a little hero who was surprisingly toppled the giant Goliath. Subsequently he led the Israeli army into a variety of victory, so he was hailed by the people. When he finally became king, he also noted the impressive achievements: return the ark of God who is deprived of the Philistines to Jerusalem, won many military victories, and show genuine kindness to Mephibosheth.
However, when he repented of his sin, he did not cite a single achievement as a weapon to "seduce" God in order to reduce his sentence. Absolutely not. Interesting to note also, he only exclaimed, "O God" instead of "my God". He realized how severe the sin has damaged his relationship with God. So, he just ask for mercy and grace of God. For his kindness is not useful for ease of sin; only the grace of God could forgive and redeem.
SIN CAN NOT BE ALLEVIATED BY GOOD DEEDS BUT CAN BE ELIMINATED BY THE GRACE OF GOD
