GRIEF IN JESUS' EYES

Baca: Matthew 5:1-12

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.(Matthew 5:4)

Bacaan tahunan: Job 21-23

Kahlil Gibran wrote, "It makes you laugh one day will make you cry, and what makes you cry now are what will make you laugh." In my experience, Gibran's aim is accurate human life. Laughter and crying are healthy and normal thing in human life. There are indeed some people who are so often experienced the bitterness of life says that "their tears are dry". However, this would indicate an unhealthy condition of the soul. Usually such people deny their own feelings and trying to toughen up without help from others. Including God.

Interesting that in his preaching, Jesus mentions grief as one of the characteristics of people who are called happy. Bereavement pentheo called in Greek, meaning "sad" or "wailing". Objects can be varied grief and lamentation. In the context of the listener at the time, so maybe grief and lamentation as they related to the status of the small people who do not have much access to the strength and resilience of social-material, sick and marginalized. Jesus gives hope that they were walking toward the door of consolation. Precisely who had never experienced sadness, will never be able to experience the warmth of comfort.

When was the last time you brought grief to the Lord's presence? Or do you feel it is pointless because God does not care? When you are honest and broken hearts before Him, remember Jesus' promise: You'll receive his comfort. So, be happy! - DKL
