FELLOWSHIP WITHOUT STRIFE

Baca: MATTHEW 20:20-28

Bacaan tahunan: 2 Corinthians 10-13

During the farewell and graduation event of our church's kindergarten, a mother requested that her child, who was going on stage to represent the students, give a memento gift to the teacher. Other mothers were upset because they also wanted their child to go on stage.

The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons to ask that they sit in His kingdom, one at His right hand and one at His left (verses 20-21). When the other ten disciples heard about this, they were angry with the two brothers (verse 24) because surely they also wanted to be at the right and left of Jesus in His kingdom. The common tendency of humans is to want to be great, first, and prominent - as rulers of nations act as lords over their people, and their officials exercise authority over them (verse 25). This tendency can occur in various communities, including in the church - where there should be a fellowship of love instead of arising strife due to the desire to stand out and be prominent.

Jesus advised, 'Not so among you; instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many' (verses 26-28). Follow the example of Jesus so that in our fellowship there will be no strife.
