Bacaan tahunan: 1 Corinthians 15-16
Some students were enjoying their holiday at the beach. Thirteen of them decided to swim and enjoy the comfort of the small waves. However, without realizing it, suddenly a rip current dragged the thirteen students. Four students were reported dead, while the other nine were saved. Many people drown not because of big waves, but because they are too comfortable in the water without realizing the hidden danger.
Today's reading records two different responses to the presence of Jesus. Martha, busy serving and feeling the need to control everything. She felt that with her busyness, she was pleasing the Lord. While Mary, chose to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His word. She chose to leave her busyness to enjoy the presence of the Lord. Martha was actually doing good things, but she was distracted from the best, from the presence and voice of the Lord. Jesus did not rebuke Martha because her service was wrong, but because her heart was distracted by worries and busyness.
We often get lulled into routines and comfort. We are comfortable with stable jobs, very exhausting services, and harmonious social relationships. However, without realizing it, that comfort "drags" us far from the center of spiritual life. Let us reflect on these questions: Do we still make time to listen to the voice of the Lord and not just serve Him? Are we comfortable with spiritual routines even without personal intimacy with the Lord?
