BEWARE OF THE BITTER ROOTS!

Baca: HEBREWS 12:1-17

Bacaan tahunan: 1 Chronicles 25-27

The birthright symbolizes spiritual blessings and family leadership responsibilities. However, Esau was willing to sell it to Jacob for a bowl of stew. He did not think things through and consider the consequences. He only focused on worldly matters, prioritizing temporary pleasures. Therefore, the writer of Hebrews describes Esau's action as profane. Because, Esau defiled or insulted spiritual matters, showing no respect for holiness. His impulsive choice led to deep regret that could not be undone. In his anger, Esau sought revenge against Jacob, causing their family unity to be shattered.

The story of Esau serves as a warning for us not to lose the grace of God. It does not mean that God arbitrarily withdraws salvation. However, it is our failed response to live in the grace of God's mercy that can cause us to lose His grace. In other words, we can lose God's grace due to our own hearts drifting away, neglecting, or rejecting it by living in sin, harboring bitterness, and disobeying.

We must always be vigilant, guarding against the small things in our hearts that have the potential to cause harm. We need to regularly cleanse our hearts from unresolved wounds or bitterness. Quickly make peace and release forgiveness, so that it does not grow into bitter roots. For bitter roots not only harm oneself, but can spread to others, causing quarrels and divisions. --EBL/www.renunganharian.net
