Bible in a year: Job 11-13
Usually, people feel lacking because they do not have the things they need. However, there are also people who feel lacking not because they do not have what they need, but because they are not satisfied with what they already have and always desire more than what they possess. These people never feel sufficient.
Apostle Paul said, "But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content" (verse 8). This is not a statement that only food and clothing are important in this life. It is an advice that feeling content with what one has is a very important spiritual attitude. This spiritual attitude makes people always feel sufficient, always feel blessed even though they do not have much. This spiritual attitude keeps people away from greed and the desire to have everything, but makes people always grateful for whatever God gives, hence their hearts are always filled with happiness. Indeed, that's the case: Feeling sufficient is the root of happiness.
On one side, feeling sufficient is a spontaneous, honest, genuine overflow of the heart, not fabricated. Pretending to feel sufficient is deceiving oneself. It does not lead to happiness. However, on the other side, feeling sufficient is a spiritual attitude that - with God's help - can be nurtured, can be developed, can be cultivated.
Truly, we need to educate our conscience to always feel sufficient with what God gives so that from our hearts, gratitude will always overflow, and we will be happy because of it. --EE/www.renunganharian.net
