According to Kompas.com on August 17, 2025, many lower middle-class residents in America spend their income on luxury accessories, the latest gadgets, new cars, etc. Despite the risk of financial difficulties, they do it to look great in the public eye.
In our country, there are similar things: people go into debt to buy branded bags, buy new cellphones even though the old one is still good, sacrifice basic needs to enjoy coffee with their group at an instagrammable cafe, and so on. People prioritize appearance, not honesty.
Actually, not daring to appear with simplicity is a serious matter. It leads to dishonesty, spawns wastefulness, and makes us prisoners of other people's views. Indeed, appearing modest is not easy. In a society intoxicated by prestige, appearing with simplicity is an act against the current. It takes courage to accept oneself, and the belief that a person's worth is not based on what appears on the outside but on what lives in the heart.
The Lord said, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth ... But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven ...." (verse 19, 20). The Lord shows that focusing on outward appearance is a form of attachment to "earthly treasures"-something fragile and fleeting. On the other hand, simplicity is a sign of a heart directed towards "heavenly treasures"-which are true and of eternal value.
Dare to appear with simplicity, because true beauty does not come from outward shine, but from honesty and simplicity, and inner peace belongs to those who dare to be themselves. --EE/www.renunganharian.net
