Read: EPHESIANS 4:17-32
Bible in a year: 1 Chronicles 7-8
There are people who seem to have a magnet for those around them. Wherever they go, there are always people approaching them to pour out their complaints or problems. Investigating further, this person always has words to comfort, strengthen, or give advice that is not patronizing to those who come to him. On the other hand, there are also people who are always hurtful and speak cynically to others, as if there is no one good except themselves.
Apostle Paul knew these two characteristics. He categorized those who like to lie, be angry, and often speak profanity as characteristics of the old self. They like to slander, often harbor bitterness and create chaos. Conversely, Paul shows the characteristics of the new self, which always speak constructive words and bring grace to others. The new self is also those who are friendly to one another, full of love and forgiveness. All these good things emulate Christ who is full of love and forgiveness.
In his advice, Apostle Paul asks that we who have believed in Christ must put off our old selves and put on the new self. That means, God has given us a new life through Jesus Christ, but we ourselves must learn to change according to His example. Change is indeed not easy. Nevertheless, we must not give up. The Holy Spirit will surely help us as we continue to strive to change. --HEM/www.renunganharian.net
