EDUCATING THE CONSCIENCE

Read: ROMANS 12:1-2

Bible in a year: 1 Chronicles 3-5

Conscience is not formed in an instant. It is born from struggles that are sometimes long and not easy. It can change, it can grow. And, we are called to educate our conscience, to guide our conscience so that it becomes more qualitative.

The apostle Paul said, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect" (verse 2). The apostle Paul talks about a change within oneself that occurs through the renewal of the mind, about a change of conscience. The apostle Paul encourages us to educate our conscience, so that our conscience becomes more in line with the will of God.

The question is, with what, and how?

Indeed, seriously contemplating something - a writing, a photo, an audio, a video, or a combination of all four, whether fiction or non-fiction, as well as events, experiences, feelings, situations, facts, both negative and positive - will sharpen our conscience towards a better quality. However, there is a note: We do this struggle with full respect to God, we measure everything according to the will of God. And, one more thing: We do this struggle with honesty: acknowledging what is wrong as wrong and leaving it, acknowledging what is right as right and embracing it. In this way, our conscience will be sharpened to become more right, sharper, more sensitive, stronger, and more open.

Materials for educating the conscience are abundant. What is needed is a true willingness to sharpen the conscience from time to time. --EE/www.renunganharian.net
