NOT JUST OPTIMISM

Read: John 16:16-33

Bible in a year: 2 Samuel 16-18

When Jesus spoke to the disciples, the atmosphere was tense. Because, the shadow of separation, betrayal, and suffering was near. The disciples were restless; their hearts were mixed with fear and disbelief about what was happening and would happen. In a situation like this, Jesus concluded His teaching with calming words, "I have overcome the world." Why in a tense situation Jesus said so? Doesn't that statement contradict reality?

Clearly, Jesus never denied reality. He honestly stated that this world is full of suffering and pressure. However, He did not stop at the news of difficulties. He provided a new perspective, that there is a peace born from His victory. This is the essence of Christian faith comfort-not just optimism, but the certainty that Christ has won. He has conquered the power of the world.

Of course, the peace He meant does not mean that life is without problems. His disciples still face rejection and persecution. However, behind all that, there is a strengthening certainty: they are not walking alone. The presence of Jesus who has won, makes them able to face the storm ahead.

Likewise with us. Daily life, with all its problems, sometimes makes us almost give up. However, Jesus' promise remains the same, "Take heart." Because He has won. Therefore, let us look at life from the perspective of Christ's victory. When pressed, stay firm. When feeling afraid, keep believing. His peace is real because He is the source Himself. --SAP/www.renunganharian.net
