Read: ROMANS 11:11-24
Bible in a year: Deuteronomy 17-20
In ancient Palestine, the olive tree was a symbol of precious life. This tree could live for hundreds of years. Its roots spread strong penetrating rocky soil. The oil produced was used for food, lighting, and even holy anointing.
Paul used the image of the olive tree to explain the unique relationship between the people of Israel and other nations. There are broken branches, there are wild branches grafted in. However, both still depend on one source: the root of the tree full of sap, namely God Himself (verse 17).
This reminds us that the life of believers never stands alone. Perhaps we feel strong, smart, or successful. However, we are just a "branch" that can live because it is united with the root. Therefore, Paul rebuked the church in Rome not to be arrogant - for it is not the branch that supports the root, but the root that supports the branch (verse 18). This is a rebuke for anyone who feels more spiritual, more worthy, or more important than others. Indeed, we are all recipients of grace, grafted into the Tree of Life (God).
Often we forget that everything comes from the faithful love of the Lord. We easily boast of achievements, positions, or successful ministries. Then, we consider others less important. Today's Word of God reminds us to learn humility. Because we are called not to boast, but to live supporting each other. So that we all become branches that produce fruit: love, joy, and peace. --SAP/www.renunganharian.net
