TEARING CLOTHES

Read: JOEL 2:12-17

Bible in a year: Deuteronomy 5-7

Tearing the clothes that are being worn is a tradition of the people of Israel to express mourning, sorrow, or regret. They do this when they hear sad news, receive threats from enemies, or face major disasters. Wearing tattered clothes shows sadness, confession of sin, or a sign of humility before the Lord.

Although some figures in the Bible story did this action sincerely, but many also did it as a formality. They did it only as a form of tradition, without truly showing a change in behavior. Therefore, God declared His punishment upon them. That is why, God rebuked and criticized His people so that they would not only tear their clothes, but tear their hearts. Yes, He wants His people's hearts to be broken because they realize how much they have sinned against God. He desires wholehearted repentance from them, after realizing that they have been unfaithful to Him, and disregarding all His commands.

Reflecting on the nation of Israel, we are also reminded not to be satisfied with just showing signs of outward repentance from our sins and evils. Confession of sin, tears shed, words of regret, and various formal actions are not enough. There must be a change in behavior as a manifestation of our broken hearts. Seen from real actions as a form of obedience to God. Turning away from darkness to light. From rebellion to obedience. From evil behavior to deeds of righteousness. From a defiled life to a life that glorifies the name of the Lord. --HT/www.renunganharian.net

WHOLEHEARTED REPENTANCE IS ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED BY A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR THAT SHOWS OUR OBEDIENCE TO GOD AT ALL TIMES.
