Read: JAMES 3:1-12
Bible in a year: Numbers 1-2
For a horse rider, reins are important to control the horse towards the desired direction. Without reins, the horse will run aimlessly and may cause damage. A control rope may seem simple, but what it controls can be something big and valuable.
James describes a control in the form of "reins" on the horse's mouth and a "very small rudder" on a large ship. This concept is used to remind us of the importance of controlling our lives with our tongue as "reins" or "rudder". Compared to other parts of the body, the tongue may be considered a small part. However, even though small, it can do great things. The tongue is like fire! When controlled wisely, it is a very good friend. But if out of control, it can destroy a forest of any size. That's how reins on the tongue determine our way of life.
Reflecting on James' warning, we are reminded that the issue raised is not about the good words that cannot be spoken, but more about the evil words that cannot be controlled. So, it is very wise when we do not boast if we can speak many good and pleasing words. Conversely, we need to strive to stop and control as many negative and unpleasant words as possible. Whatever comes out of our mouths determines the direction of our steps. --SYS/www.renunganharian.net
