GUARDED HEART

Read: PROVERBS 4:20-23

Bible in a year: Leviticus 26-27

Andre was annoyed when he was about to get off the Commuter, but there was someone who insisted on entering without giving a chance to passengers who were going to get off first. There were some harsh words from his mouth, but not long after Andre felt a soft voice echoing in his heart, "Why did I speak so harshly?" Andre soon realized that the Holy Spirit was speaking in his conscience, to rebuke and remind Andre to have more self-control. "Actually I could deliver the same message, but in a gentler way," regretted Andre shortly afterwards.

Spontaneous reactions to an event usually reflect the contents of the heart, as well as the habits that shape a person's character, which are seen through attitudes, words, and actions. That is why the advice to guard the heart vigilantly still feels relevant today. Vigilance is the key in this matter because this heart can easily be infiltrated by anger, resentment, and bitterness that can take root and ruin the life of believers. The Word of God also advises believers not to keep their lives away from God's grace, so that no bitter root grows and takes over (Hebrews 12:15).

We may not be able to control other people's behavior, but the matter of self-control and guarding the heart from all forms of contamination is fully our responsibility. Let's make sure our hearts are in good condition, so that our spontaneous reactions also produce good behavior. --GHJ/www.renunganharian.net
