Read: ISAIAH 10:20-27
Bible in a year: Genesis 41-42
I watched a National Geographic program covering the struggle of salmon. At certain times, salmon will swim against the strong currents. They do this in order to lay their eggs in the right location. It is not easy to swim against strong currents. It is easier for salmon to swim with the flow of water. However, they choose to swim against the strong currents for one purpose: to continue their lineage. This phenomenon is known as 'salmon run'.
Prophet Isaiah was prophesying the destruction of Israel at the hands of the Assyrians because of their sin of idol worship. Although they were initially depicted as numerous as the sand by the sea (verse 22), only a few will survive, those who resist the flow of idol worship and choose to have faith in God. The Lord is pleased with those who remain, those who are left of the descendants of Jacob; those who remain faithful and truly lean on the Lord rather than idols (verse 20). They remain steadfast in faith and do not allow themselves to be swept away in the current of unfaithfulness that swept through Israel at that time. They believe and remain loyal to the Lord. Therefore, the Lord comforts and strengthens the remnant of Israel. He promises to act in defense of and help them.
It is indeed not easy to stand alone against the currents of life that lead us away from God, when those around us are following the flow. We may suffer for holding fast to our faith in God while others give in and live in sin. However, God never leaves us and will continue to accompany and protect us. Therefore, do not give up, continue to lean on and remain faithful to Christ. --DSK/www.renunganharian.net
