Read: Matthew 16:13-20
Bible in a year: Genesis 38-40
In the region of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" (verse 13). The place was known as a center of pagan worship, full of temples and symbols of worldly power. In the midst of diverse beliefs and spiritual identity confusion, Jesus chose this place to inquire about His own identity and lay the foundation of His church. It was a surprising choice. Clearly, Jesus wanted to affirm that the Church would stand firm in the midst of a shaky world.
At that moment, Peter answered confidently, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!" (verse 16). This answer did not come from mere human understanding, but from divine revelation. And upon this confession of faith, Jesus established His church—not on Peter's personality, but on the foundation of true faith expressed by Peter. Here we learn that a strong spiritual foundation is not built on popularity, facilities, or traditions, but on a deep personal knowledge of the living Christ.
Building a spiritual life is not about strengthening appearances, but deepening the foundation of faith. One may be diligent in serving, active in church, or hold various important positions in Christian organizations. However, if one does not have a personal knowledge of Christ, everything will be fragile. Therefore, examining the foundation of our faith is important.
