Read: Numbers 11:4-23
Bible in a year: Exodus 16-18
The desert is not a comfortable place to live, especially for a long time. It is silent, dry, and barren. The temperature is very hot during the day and very cold at night. Some poisonous animal species also exist there. That was the condition faced by the Israelites after coming out of slavery in Egypt. The difficult situation made them neglect the promise of God that the place was not their destination, but a process towards the Promised Land.
They then boasted about how beautiful their previous life in the land of Egypt was, even saying it was abundant with honey and milk (cf. Numbers 16:13). They remembered how delicious the food was with various seasoning they claimed to have received there for free. They cried because they wanted to eat meat. They even insulted the manna, the food that God provided every day for them to enjoy. In fact, in Egypt, they lived as slaves. Oppressed by the rulers and living in misery (Exodus 1). They twisted the facts because they were unable to be grateful for God's gifts and provisions. They seemed to be stricken with spiritual amnesia, a disease of forgetting the goodness of God.
They forgot that God had provided for their needs in His miraculous way. They had also experienced various miracles: escaping from various plagues in Egypt and crossing the Red Sea. If they wanted something, they should have been able to ask God for it with respect, especially since His presence could be witnessed through the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire, at all times. This spiritual amnesia made them fall under God's wrath. May we stay away from such a nature!
