Read: MATTHEW 2:1-12
Bible in a year: Hebrews 1-6
Before they left the palace, the magi were interrogated by Herod. He asked them, after finding the Child, to inform him so that he could also worship Him. However, after meeting the Child, they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, but to go back through another way. The magi obeyed the warning.
Did they realize the danger that awaited them if they returned to Jerusalem? Matthew did not explain. However, a few verses later we read about the heinous massacre of infants by Herod. Implicitly, Matthew shows the risk taken by the magi when they chose not to obey Herod's command.
They were convinced that the Child in the humble house was a King greater and more powerful than Herod. Whose command should be followed. Even if they had to risk their lives. They went back "through another way". The word 'way' in this verse does not only refer to a geographical way, but also refers to a way of life (cf. Matt. 7:13-14; John 14:6). The encounter with the King indeed radically changed their way of life.
To what extent does an encounter with God change and influence our way of life? How does this encounter stir up our obedience and courage to go "through another way" even though it may be difficult for us?
