Read: LUKE 3:1-6
Bible in a year: 1 Corinthians 12-14
Luke listed a number of names along with their positions when John the Baptist began his ministry. Tiberius became the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate became the governor of Judea. Herod, Philip, and Lysanias became kings of different cities in Israel and its surroundings. Annas and Caiaphas became high priests. They were the leaders in the fields of politics and religion. They had authority over certain regions. Occupying positions desired by many people. Residing in the city center, government center, and religious center. In contrast, God chose someone who did not have a position, was not considered by humans, and was not in the center of attention but in the desert to proclaim the Messiah to the world.
John called himself a "voice crying out" (verse 4). He did not highlight himself. He did not want to impress others with his greatness. Instead, he considered that he was not the most important, but Christ whom he preached. He could be unknown to others, it didn't matter to him, as long as people knew more about Christ whom he preached. He truly positioned himself as a messenger. Christ himself was the core of his message.
In a world where everyone strives to have a great name and a great position, even in the world of ministry, where do we stand? Are we nurturing our own greatness or are we still focused on magnifying the name of Christ? We should be humble enough to admit that Christ should be the center of our proclamation, who is exalted and glorified through our lives. This is what we should always proclaim.
