Read: PSALM 42
Bible in a year: Luke 8-9
There have been many moments in the history of the Israelites where they experienced deep disappointment and sadness. One of them is when they were in exile. Living in a foreign land that worshipped idols, far from home and places of worship, treated inhumane, such as forced labor, mocked and scorned.
In that situation, Psalm 42 was born, reflecting a deep longing for the presence of the Lord and His house. This Psalm shows how believers face feelings of despair by still hoping in the Lord. In verse 12, "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." reveals the inner dialogue of the psalmist struggling with feelings of oppression and disappointment. However, in the midst of the struggle, he directs himself to continue to hope in God. The psalmist reminds himself that the Lord is the source of help and hope even though the situation seems dark and hopeless at that time. This is a form of strong faith, which does not give in to despair.
In everyday life, we are often faced with disappointing situations. Work does not go according to plan, relationships are broken, hopes are unfulfilled, or dreams are not achieved. This passage invites us not to be trapped in deep disappointment. Instead, direct our gaze to the Lord, who is always faithful and ready to provide help. Every time we feel pressed, let us remember His promises and strengthen ourselves by being grateful for His goodness that we have experienced.
WHEN DISAPPOINTMENT COMES, DIRECT YOUR HEART TO THE LORD, TRUE HOPE NEVER DISAPPOINTS
