HOLY FEAR

Read: ROMANS 11:11-24

Bible in a year: Luke 4-5

It is common for farmers to graft good branches onto a tree with strong roots. The goal is certainly to produce good fruit. Never once does a farmer graft wild branches haphazardly to avoid damaging the tree and the quality of its harvest. However, unlike human customs, the Lord grafts wild branches onto the True Olive Tree.

Yes, non-Jewish nations (including us) who truly have no special privilege are given the opportunity to be united in Christ. The Lord is gracious, giving the opportunity to live in His grace tree to nations that should have perished. As a result, every individual grafted into Christ receives His fullness, receiving the flow of nourishment from Him.

Because of this special grace, Paul exhorts each of us, as grafted branches, not to be arrogant. For without the flow of nourishment from the True Olive Root, we are nobody, cannot do anything, mean nothing. Instead of feeling safe and proud, Paul reminds us to have a holy fear of the Lord.

It is not a fear filled with anxiety in case God is not faithful to His promise. For our Lord is faithful in His promises of love, justice, and truth. However, holy fear is a feeling of respect and reverence, placing deep appreciation for the Lord. Admiration for His authority and glory, expressed in obedience: living faithfully in His commandments, abandoning all forms of sinful habits.
